AUTHOR GAETAN PIKIOUNE JUNIOR’S BOOK ‘THE
ADVENTURES OF SEAN THE SQUIRREL AND NATE THE NIGHTINGALE: Relatable Rangi the
Roo’ INSPIRES CHILDREN TO CELEBRATE DIFFERENCES AND BE KIND TO OTHERS
The second book by Port-Vila
based Gaetan Pikioune Junior, written to shine a light on discrimination and
the importance of being inclusive and kind.
‘The Adventures of Sean the
Squirrel and Nate the Nightingale: Relatable Rangi the Roo’ is a
heart-warming tale about friendship and kindness, beautifully illustrated for
kids aged 5 – 12 years. Sean and Nate, who is in a wheelchair, are best friends
who look out for each other. Nate is sad as his grandfather has passed away. His
grandfather was a very large influence on Nate’s life and had taught him to be
confident in his wheelchair and to achieve his goals in life. Kyrangi the
Kangaroo has also lost someone close to him. Kyrangi is new to the school and
has trouble settling in as he has a very pale complexion as he has albinism. Some
of the children at school are treating him differently as he looks a little
different from them. The three boys form a strong new friendship through shared
loss and being a little different from others. The book has powerful message
about treating everyone with respect.
In creating the story, Gaetan highlights the importance of
being inclusive and kind, especially towards others who we may consider different.
His hope is that this story both entertains and inspires children to be the
best version of themselves and to be kind to their classmates and neighbours.
