A new home - a new school; for 13 year old Lucy, an only child, the move north to Yorkshire has been a bad move and has pin-pointed her stressful relationship with her parents.
Lucy's parents are both what Lucy calls 'ists' - her mother is an activist, her father a careerist - and Lucy is in the middle. The crisis in the family comes to a head when a nuclear waste disposal site is proposed in their village. Acrimony grows as Lucy's mother throws herself into the struggle against the proposal in a way which her husband claims is seriously jeopardising his career as a Deputy Chief Librarian in nearby Bradford.
