There are many different kinds of loss, and many different ways of reacting to that loss. You can play dead, like Kate; you can rage, like Maddie; or you can hide behind your specs, like Nat. The harder the loss is to take, the harder it is to see clearly what's going on, let alone what anyone could do about it...

When a frustrated and furious Maddie gallops her horse up on to the Ridge trails, the last person she expects to see is her best friend from primary school, Kate. Still less does she expect to see Kate lying at the side of the trail, dumped by the biker who's raped her. Maddie takes her to the youth refuge, where she meets Nat the Nerd, another dumped loser. But what can any of them do about it? How do you reclaim the day, never mind the night?
