Lizza is 14 years old, growing up in north-eastern England during the 1920's. She is sent by her mother, from the rural pit village where her family live, to work in the mills of industrial Bradford. She is put under the dubious care of her flighty, unreliable elder sister, Ivy, but Ivy's erratic lifestyle means that Lizza must fend for herself. It is a grey, hostile world that she faces, overshadowed by unemployment and deprivation, but Lizza is determined to survive and to come to terms, not only with the uncertainties of her Bradford life, but also with the dominating influence of her powerful mother.
