From here onwards the valley was bare. She reached the ledge over the beach, through which the stream had cut a channel, and looked out to sea. The waves were breaking against the headlands, and the spray hung like smoke over the shore. An island appeared through the mist. She thought of Mr Treloar coming down the valley, ever since he was a boy all those years ago, watching for the peregrine falcons on the cliffs and the flocks of woodcock coming in from the sea.
